A little update regarding closing or selling the site.
A very awkward moment this morning between Rich and The Musers aired. Evidently Rich was testing some things on the live internet feed, which so many people use to tune in and it was interrupting their listening experience.
Junior decides to call Rich out on the air and a battle begins. All Rich can say is to blame it on the interim program director, which is apparently Junior Miller. The most interesting point of the altercation was when Rich yells that they were done, to which Junior immediately moves on. Does Rich hold rank over Junior?
Rich doesn’t hold rank over anybody up there, trust me. Maybe over whoever his producer is for Race Weak, and that’s it.
He’s assistant program director… http://theticket.com/Contact/tabid/417/Default.aspx
Actually he does.
Huh…although I was severely ticked off with the stream swapping back and forth between Rotten Radio/Blackout/Commercial mode and regular mode, I kinda feel like Junior pushed it just a bit too far. Happily awaiting the Plainsman’s take on this…
Would you rather listen to two hours of Race Week, or listen to a vuvuzela right in your ear for ten minutes? The Hardline was discussing this a couple days ago.
I especially liked it when Junior compared himself to Brian Williams and the NBC nightly news. Ego out of control much?
Said it before, can say it about every day, Junior is the luckiest man in the history of broadcasting. He has a little something, but mostly he has two incredibly talented friends.
Im pretty sure Rich is actually one of the prgoram directors for the station. So yes he has a bit of say with Junior.
Put it this way: wasn’t Freedo also ‘assistant PD’? Do you really think Freedo or Rich can tell someone like Rhyner or Junior or Jub what to do? It’s a title and that’s it. That’s like saying the assistant program director at EIB is over Rush.
@Stephen – I actually ended up conducting that experiment when someone told me that Rich snapped at TC during a ticker yesterday and I went looking for it….5 consecutive rich phillips tickers played at high speed is pretty close to a squadron of vuvuzelas.
was anybody rolling on it later when Junior cut off Dick Hicks like Brad Sham does to Mickey?
I got the impression that when Rich says we are done, he was talking about the testing.
That was me, sorry I don’t have an exact time. Pretty sure it was a live spot, not a ticker, and between 6:20 and 7 on Tuesday.
Rich starts his spot, you hear the *Bzzzt* and he snaps with “Everything okay in there?” or something of the sort and goes back to his spot. Obviously TC wanted to get in on the vuvuzel dogpile and didn’t realize that dropping dropping during a livespot is a big no-no.
I shot Grubes and Dan an email about it yesterday and they were interested in the audio. TC whippings = great radio.
I’m retarded at this commenting system, so my bad if I post this twice.
I gave the heads up on the Rich audio, but I think it was a live spot, not a ticker. Sorry I don’t have a specific time, should be between 6:20 and 7ish on Tuesday morning.
Rich starts his live spot, then you hear the *bzzzt* and Rich stops down and asks “Everything okay in there?” or something to that effect, then keeps going with the spot. TC obviously wanted to get in on the vuvuzela dogpile but didn’t know it’s a big no-no to drop during a live spot.
I emailed Dan and Grubes yesterday and they’d be interested in the audio. I anticipate another TC beating incoming, which would be great.
Why is the ticket shoving Rich Phillips down our throat? He has about four commercials now which is more than any real on-air personalities have. Anytime he joins in the discussion with the musers I immediately change the station. He has a horrible case of fake radio voice. Every p1 friend of mine can’t stand him either so I know it’s not just me. P1s don’t relate to NASCAR and deathmetal.
Rich may have title, but I would be shocked if he actually has much power over the major hosts. Rich is like the awkward friend in every group that always comes to hang outs even though he wasn’t necessarily invited or wanted there. He got grandfathered into his “title” big time.
@sooieeehog: If Junior is the luckiest man in the history of broadcasting, then what does that make Rich?
@sooieeehog- You obviously never heard the word “facetious” before in your life, because if you did, you’d know that Junior’s ego wasn’t “out of control.” Believe me, I’ve met him at numerous road shows and he’s one of the nicest guys you’ll come across.
We are done!
Junior is dispatcher for the talent on the show. Nice guy, yep, but he spares me to death. His contribution this morning about whether Wade should rest his starters is a classic example of Craig Miller – boring, unimaginative, and a bit snotty. At least he didn’t go into a bicycling story.
1) It doesn’t matter who holds sway over who, you don’t conduct tests during the morning or afternoon drive shows. If Rich is there 11 hours a day, then he can do it during BaD radio.
2) Craig was being facetious while also making a good point. Don’t mess with the anchor shows of the station.
3) Race Weak es muy terrible.
3)
@AP It was me that tipped off about the TC vuvuzela drop. It wasn’t during a ticker, but a live spot. Rich starts the live spot, then the vuvuzela plays and he stops down to snap something like “Everything alright in there?” and continues his spot. I’m almost positive that it was between 6:20 and 7 on Tuesday morning, but this week has been such a haze for me that it might have been Monday if Jer was out then.
If you have any way to send me the Musers audio for Monday and Tuesday I’ll listen to them and find it.
@regular Matt: Rich Phillips isn’t smooth velvet to my ears, either, and I turn off “Race Week” immediately, but I get the sense that he’s a hard-working and nice guy. He’s paid his dues by working as a Ticker guy, doing all the odd jobs around the station, and now taking on assistant PD duties. Contrast that with Junior, who contributes little, works with two of the most talented people on DFW radio, and whose salary is probably multiples of Rich’s. Who’s luckier?
@Hollywood Matt: thanks for being a super successful smart person who can teach me words. Yes, Junior often spoofs his giant ego and absolute need to be right (uniform czar, etc), but it’s funny ’cause it’s true. And in this instance, his true colors shone through. “How dare you interrupt our Marconi-award-winning broadcast as you’re desperately trying to fight through some technical issues?”
@Newjack: exactly.
@sooieehog You may hate Junior, and that’s fine, but you are selling him way too short. I think he’s the best broadcaster at the station in terms of being smooth, not screwing up words or livespots, and getting a point across or telling story. And while he may not do the funny voices, he seems to always come up with entertaining segments (women say the damndest things, you’re an ass if, scattershooting, etc). Plus, his sports points are not generic–he’s the only one on the show who will rip Wade, or Wash, or Cuban, or Dirk, or Romo–if they need to be ripped. George is the one who always generically defends the local coaches and teams. Junior brings more to that show than you think.
He bugs me a bit because he’s a Sooner fan (Hook ‘Em), but I recognize his contribution to the station. Didn’t he come up with the nickname P1 for the listeners? That alone should earn him some respect.
Oh–and I back @Hollywood Matt — Junior has no ego in person. I’ve met him at a few road shows and he’s always nice. Plus, I thought it was cool that he ran that marathon this year to raise money for little Sam who has MD. My family has been affected by MD (my nephew), so I appreciated the effort. Stuff like doesn’t matter much to those who aren’t personally affected, but believe me, when it touches your life, you notice, and you appreciate it.
For what it’s worth, my in-person interactions with Junior have also been pleasant. And I admire his marathon-running, etc. But I was talking about his on-air contribution. Will agree that he’s smooth and efficient at getting out of breaks, introducing segments, etc. But is that why people tune in?
I think Spank Miller is pretty F’n funny on his own. I don’t see him as being carried by Jah and Gordo, I see them all as equals. Which is why the show is so awesome.
As far as ego’s … it’s human nature to have some sort of ego when you’re the top dog in whatever you do. For where these guys are in talk radio, their ego’s are very tame. (see Russ Martin and his ‘don’t make eye contact with me’ clause) I think everyone at the Ticket has fairly tame ego’s … well, except for Corby and his funny cocky drops about how awesome he is.
and about how he cannot eat Kroger brand salsa.
They all compliment each other, and that’s what makes their show so good. Chemistry. Whenever any one of them is out, its just not the same, which to me means they all bring something to the table. I think each is great. Can’t imagine my mornings without them.
We’re burying the lead here…who dat girl?
Ines Sainz … look her up in google images.

By the way, I actually really like Rich when he’s with Donavan. Quack and Black is my favorite fill in show by far. I think Rich just tries too hard with tickers, and you can really hear the fake radio voice during them.
Jub is awful and should be removed from the show. He has a HUGE bag of nothing and is a grumpy old man.
